4 Techniques 1 Weekend SAT 20 + SUN 21 APR | 9AM-12 NOON + 1-4PM (school holidays)

Our 4 techniques weekend is coming up very soon. We hope you will learn some new skills or try out something new!

  • Member $50 per session or $185 for all four 
  • Non member (student,other clubs, public)  $60 per session or $200 for all four  
  • To book your spot email CPA with ‘4 techniques’ as subject  
  • If you are coming for the whole day bring something to eat. We will supply tea and coffee.

SAT 20th 9-12 | GLAZING PREPARATION & WAXING FOR BEGINNERS | SKILL LEVEL : BEGINNERS AND PEOPLE NEW TO WAX 

 Alyse is one of our very experienced tutors who makes beautiful domestic ware and has a huge amount of technical knowledge around glazing and glaze preparation.  You can see some of her work on Instagram  @alyseoliver.

  • Alyse will guide you through how to prepare and glaze a variety of domestic work (cups, bowls, lidded vessels, plates etc.), show waxing with hot wax, no wax on bottoms, and cold wax resist for bottoms of pots. There will be a demonstration of how to make use of wax with alumina when glazing lidded vessels. You will have a go with your own work. You will also make a duster for pots which will be used for cleaning out vessels in preparation for glazing. 

SAT 20th  1-4 | CLAY MARBLING & DOMESTIC WARE PINCH POT | HEATHER BELL | Demo & hands on SKILL LEVEL : ANYONE FROM BEGINNER ON

Heather Bell  has worked with clay and taught pottery for decades, gaining a Diploma of Art (Ceramics) from the Australian National University, and Bachelor of Applied Arts (Sculpture) from NorthTec in Whangarei.Her work has been selected for national and overseas exhibitions, and is held in collections here and around the world.

  • You will see how to use two different coloured clays to create marbled clay, and then marble your own, and use it to make pinch pots. Make one or two unique dishes – i.e. cup, plate, bowl, egg cup, spoon, with your marbled clay that you’ll learn to make yourself. Heather will share tips and tricks learnt over the decades of teaching and making ceramics. Clay will be supplied.

SUN 21st  9-12 | VINYL STENCIL & TAPE RELIEF DECORATION | RILEY FAGAN | Demo & hands on SKILL LEVEL : FOR EVERYONE

Riley is from Vancouver, Canada and took his first class after moving to Christchurch two years ago. Rileys work is mostly functional and enjoys experimenting with texture, colour and patterns. He also has an interest in combining digital and physical art through geometric patterns. These patterns are created digitally and then transferred to the ceramics with vinyl cutting and glazes. You can see some examples of Riley’s work on his Instagram page @riley.pottery.

  • Riley will demonstrate how to design digital stencils to use for decorating both bisque and greenware (no computer skills are needed!) Learn how to apply vinyl stencils to bisque ware and different methods of using underglaze and brushing glazes with them. You will get to decorate your own pieces using vinyl stencils and tape.

SUN 21st  1-4 | POTTERY PHOTOGRAPHY FOR SOCIAL MEDIA | KATHY THORPE | Demo & hands on SKILL LEVEL : FOR EVERYONE

Kathy Thorpe is  an artist, photographer, and entrepreneur. Since 2008, Kathy has immersed herself in commercial photography, co-founding The Zoo with her husband Ryan in 2011. However, it’s pottery that truly captures her heart.

Having settled in Canterbury, Kathy has showcased her photographic prints and pottery in two solo exhibitions, sharing her passion with the North Canterbury community. Last year, she embarked on an artist residency at Oxford Gallery for a few weeks.

Kathy sells pottery at the Ohoka markets on Friday mornings. You can catch her at Studio 7 in Waikuku on Thursdays and Saturdays between 11 am and 2 pm, where she shares a pottery studio/store. Kathy also enjoys teaching beginner classes for Kudo clay. Kathy looks forward to combining her two passions of photography and pottery in an upcoming workshop for Canterbury Potters.

  • In this workshop you will learn about lighting, composition, style, editing, product versus hero shots, still and motion photography. Plus a sneak peak into professional photography.
