Darryl will challenge us to think differently about how we work with tools and discuss how wood firing can enhance the visual effect.

Who: Anyone who wants to challenge their boundaries.

Beginners welcome!

When: Saturday 10 (9.30 – 3.30) and Sunday 11 October (10 – 3.30)

Cost: $120

Book: Email canterburypotters@gmail.com with “Selector’s workshop” in the subject line. We will send you the payment details – your place will be confirmed when we receive your payment.

Darryl will also be giving a talk and slideshow on the evening of Friday, 09 October, about his work and practice. Watch your emails and the noticeboard for details…

Plaster Press Mould Workshop

Make Your Own Plaster Press Mould

with Amy Michaels

The focus of this workshop is learning the technique of how to build a one-piece, drop out press mould. Many of you may have used a press mould and know the advantages of their use such as multiples, sets or coiling and slab. This workshop is about taking the next step; to build a plaster mould.

Amy has been using plaster moulding techniques in her studio practice since graduating from Christchurch Polytechnic with a Batchelor of Visual Arts in 2005. Her moulding techniques range from press moulding to slip casting using a simple one-piece mould to an intricate 40 piece mould. Some of her work can be viewed here; https://amymichaels.nz/

Outline

On Saturday, Amy will start with an introduction on how she uses plaster moulds in her own studio practice. This will be followed by a presentation of examples and the various methods of how to use plaster moulds. She will then demonstrate making a one-piece, drop out press mould. Amy will also discuss suitable objects to use as a model which the students will bring along and use on Sunday.

Sunday will be focused on students designing and building their own one-piece, drop out press mould. Amy will facilitate the day, working with students individually as they implement their design and building projects.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the weekend, it is expected that students will have gained enough knowledge to be able to execute a mould making project independently. Students will also have a plaster mould to use in their studio practice.

When: Saturday 19th September, 1 pm – 4 pm & Sunday 20th September, 10 am – 4 pm.

Where: CPA Club rooms, 395 Memorial Ave, Christchurch.

Cost: $95.00 (materials included)

Enrolment: email canterburypotters@gmail.com with ‘mould making workshop’ as the subject header. Please include your name and phone number. We will send you the payment details – your place will be confirmed when we receive your payment. Once enrolled you will be sent a list of what to bring to the workshop. Please note that places are limited, so get in quick – by Friday 11th September, to avoid disappointment.

Xmas Pottery Market

Xmas Pottery Market

Relatively new to our December calendar, this has become a successful event to promote the club and the craft in Christchurch.  For a modest fee, potters can set up a stall under the trees in our lovely reserve, to sell their work.

Buy local and handmade this Christmas from established and emerging Canterbury potters under the trees at the Avice Hill Reserve.  Practical, arty, unique, decorative and different. Whether you are looking for that perfect mug or soup bowl, a little something for the teacher, a dramatic statement piece for indoors or out, an interesting piece to fill that difficult spot, or anything in between, you can come and buy it here, direct from the artist who created it.

Raku Firing Group

Upcoming Firing with the CPA Raku Group

The raku process creates dramatic decorative items. The exposed unglazed area will ‘blacken’
in the firing process and the contrast between the blackened surface and glazed areas is the
key to a successful design. We will have white crackle glazes and copper lustre glazes, and you
can incorporate colour using underglazes.

When: Sunday 16 August 10 am.

Where: CPA Club rooms, 395 Memorial Ave, Christchurch.

What you need: $10.00 per person, bisque pieces and your lunch.
